Syntax and Semantics in natural Language Parsers

CMU-CS-85-133

Robert E. Frederking oot This report includes Frederking's "An Approach to Natural Language Understanding in Rule-based Systems", in Proceedings of the First Annual Workshop on Theoretical Issues in Conceptual Information Processing . TICIP-1, March 1984.

May 1985

The relationship between syntax and semantics is discussed, as an approach to thinking about different types of natural language parsers. Several types are then reviewed, and difficult natural language phenomena are discussed. The Psli3 semantic chart parser is presented as a possible solution to the problem of syntax, and its theoretical capabilities are discussed. An example of the current capabilities of the parser is presented.
